Crowds flock to 2018 Easter Art Exhibition on Kangaroo Island
A huge and festive crowd attended the opening of the biennial Kangaroo Island Easter Art Exhibition at the Penneshaw Town Hall on Friday evening.
Visitors were excited by the number and diversity of the works, with one guest overhead to say, “I am gobsmacked by how much talent there is on this island.”
The judges were Leigh Robb from the Art Gallery of SA and Tony Kearney, an artist-curator.
The two judges commented on the consistently high quality of art-making coming out of such a small community and that one of the most difficult sections to judge had been the incredible work from the children.
Peggy Rismiller, chairperson of the organising committee of Artist Collective KI, said she was extremely pleased with the community turnout and the positive energy of the evening.
“A breadth and variety of work has resulted from this year’s theme ‘Watch This Space’,” Peggy said.
“Artists have been stimulated to deeply examine their own practices and in doing so have provided audiences with a rich range of artwork which invites and encourages contemplative viewing.”
“I can’t believe there can be so many different interpretations of the same theme.”
This year’s wonderful prize pool – created by an enormous number of generous local sponsors – has been boosted with three new awards to a total of 23 prizes across 12 categories.
On Friday evening in front of a crowd of nearly 200, the prize winners were announced.
All the winners were thrilled and proud, and in some instances rendered speechless.
Organisers were delighted that while entries were open to Kangaroo Island and mainland artists, so many of the winning artworks were created by resident artists of diverse ages and backgrounds.
The 2018 People’s Choice prize will be announced at the end of the exhibition, which closes at 3pm on Sunday, April 9.
Watch this space for a full list of all winners which will be published in The Islander.
