Samsung to pay Apple $539m in damages
Samsung must pay Apple $539m for infringing five patents in phones sold between 2010 and 2011, a jury ruled in a landmark ‘smartphone wars’ case.
The unanimous decision in the US District Court of San Jose, the culmination of seven years of complex court battles, is approximately halfway between what both parties had sought.
Apple had originally claimed $1bn in damages following a 2011 ruling that its Korean rival’s Galaxy S phones had infringed Apple’s three design patents and two utility patents. This award was later reduced to $399m, a figure examined in the latest court appearance.
