The fast-fashion juggernaut is doing what it does best on not one, but two of the hottest sneakers of 2018.
Zara is known for a couple of things: being a fast fashion trailblazer, building a $100 billion retail empire, and taking “inspiration” from high-fashion trends like it’s a sport. The mega-retailer has found huge success for their ability to take styles and looks seen on Parisian runways, give the designs the ole Zara twist, and then sell it to the masses at an affordable price. A couple of years ago, this practice mostly focused on clothing, but with sneakers as popular as ever, the chain store has started to experiment with producing on-trend footwear styles. Two of their latest models, aptly named “Sneakers With Thick Soles” and “Black High Top Sneakers” look like two other very in-demand sneakers. (Hint: Kanye West and Demna Gvasalia are probably having a good laugh right about now.)
This isn’t the first time that Zara has played with buzzy sneaker trends or designs that echo the vibe of West and Gvasalia. Back in 2016, the retailer sold an entire collection of nude-ish colors and oversized, boxy silhouettes shortly after West presented a similar look in his own Yeezy Season 1 show. And in fall of last year, Zara debuted their own $35 version of the high-fashion ugly sneaker. It was more of a generic, off-brand take on the bulky, oversized silhouettes made popular by the likes of Gvasalia’s Balenciaga Triple S and the Raf Simons x Adidas Ozweego than any one shoe in particular.
However, these two new sneaker looks eerily similar to West’s Yeezy Wave Runner and Gvasalia’s Balenciaga Speed Trainer, respectively. Zara will do what Zara does though, so no one should be too surprised to see the retailer give their take on two of today’s most sought-after sneakers. It’s worth mentioning Adidas also appears to be offering their own mass market version of a bulky Yeezy-like sneaker, the Yung 1. (Perhaps the Three Stripes is trying to beat fast fashion at its own game?) Either way, the Wave Runner and Speed Trainer are nearly impossible to purchase these days, but you should have little trouble getting your hands on either of these Zara sneakers.
